Workshop Topics and Key Outcomes

Communication Channels and Barriers

Participants discussed the challenges in reaching all community members, particularly isolated individuals and the elderly, who may not be active on digital platforms. Key barriers identified include limited access to social media for some residents and a lack of centralized, consistent communication.

To address these challenges, several communication strategies were suggested:

Neighbourhood Support and Street Ambassadors: Establishing a network of street-specific ambassadors who could act as connectors and facilitators within their areas, using informal and face-to-face communication methods to engage those who may not be reachable online.

Social Media and Digital Platforms: Utilizing existing social channels where possible but with an understanding that they may not reach everyone.

Community Blinds (Notice Boards): Posting updates in public spaces to ensure that information is accessible offline.

Centralized Event Coordination: Implementing a single calendar to organize and publicize community events, making it easier for residents to know what’s happening.

First Action Points

The group defined success as creating a “social backbone” within the community that supports regular neighbourhood events and fosters a sense of connectivity. This would include:

Central Source of Information: A single, reliable source where residents can access comprehensive information about events, gatherings, and community news.

Coordinator Role: A dedicated person or team to oversee the communication network, collaborate with community groups, and invite participation.

Active Network of Street Ambassadors: Engaged community members who can keep their neighbours informed and encourage social interactions, contributing to a more resilient and cohesive community.

Immediate Action Plan

A conceptual action plan graphic to put these ideas into practice was created, inspired by a “sales funnel” model, the plan outlines steps to streamline communication flow:

Where/When/Who Information: Establishing clarity on event logistics with a focus on accessibility for all.

Single Community Calendar: Coordinating events in one place, which could be both online and in a printed format for easy reference.

Outreach through Flagstaff and Local Publications: Collaborating with the local newspaper, Flagstaff, and other media to publish event details and regular updates.

Mapping the Community: Creating a “who’s who” map of key community figures, organizations, and resources to simplify outreach and engagement efforts.

Summarising Communication Channels and Barriers

This workshop provided a strategic plan for improving community communication, emphasizing both digital and offline channels to reach all residents effectively. The Devonport Peninsula Trust aims to leverage an integrated approach, combining neighbourhood ambassadors, a centralized event calendar, and partnerships with local publications. By strengthening communication channels, the Trust hopes to build a more connected, informed, and engaged community.
