Workshop Topics and Key Outcomes
Lake Road
Transport Challenges and Proposed Solutions
Participants discussed various issues and proposed actions for improving transport infrastructure on Lake Road, a contested route used by car commuters, schoolchildren, Navy personnel, heavy vehicles, and public transport. Key points included:
-
Public Frustration and Congestion:
-
Lake Road experiences severe congestion, affecting daily commutes and frustrating residents.
-
A proposed congestion charge could help alleviate traffic by incentivizing the use of alternative transport methods.
-
-
Public Transport Reliability:
-
Current public transport options are seen as unreliable, limiting their attractiveness to residents.
-
Suggestions included enhancements to make public transport a more viable and consistent option.
-
-
Traffic Flow Adjustments:
-
A tidal flow system was proposed, where two lanes would be dedicated outbound in the morning and two lanes inbound in the evening to improve commuter flow.
-
Additionally, ensuring traffic lights are synchronized and considering the removal of parking in key areas (e.g., Belmont shops) during peak hours were discussed as ways to enhance traffic movement.
-
-
Navy Base Scheduling:
-
Introducing staggered hours at the Navy Base could reduce peak-time congestion by dispersing traffic associated with defence personnel.
-

Summarising Lake Road Initiative
This workshop provided a platform for residents to discuss Lake Road's transport issues and brainstorm potential solutions. The initiatives proposed, from traffic management to public transport reliability, reflect a community-driven approach to addressing transport challenges in a way that enhances daily life, reduces frustration, and promotes wellbeing. The Devonport Peninsula Trust, through collaboration with Auckland Transport and other local stakeholders, could aim to drive forward these community-backed solutions to create a more efficient and harmonious transport experience for all.
Informed by this survey's results, how could the Peninsula be an even better place to live?
We'd love to see you at the Community Hui and bring-a-plate afternoon tea.
