Workshop Topics and Key Outcomes

Purpose and Goals of Community Events

Participants emphasized the importance of community events to promote a sense of belonging, empower residents, and enhance social wellbeing. Events were seen as a means to engage people of all ages, reduce isolation, and provide an opportunity for neighbours to connect.

Proposed Events

Several event ideas emerged, focusing on inclusivity and variety:

  • Neighbour’s Day and Cafe Day: Dedicated days for neighbours to meet and socialize.

  • Seasonal Street Parties and Barbecues:Community-wide events during warmer seasons to bring people together outdoors.

  • Creative Activities like Sandcastle Building: Unique, family-friendly events to foster interaction and creativity.

The workshop highlighted the need for support structures like “starter packs” to help organize street parties and set up community groups. Additionally, a local notice board, bike hubs, and welcome packs for new residents in Kainga Ora areas were proposed to facilitate participation and engagement across demographics.

Success Criteria

Successful events were defined by community-wide participation, effective coordination, and clear communication about upcoming activities. Matching local skills and resources to event needs was considered essential to ensure events were impactful. Success would also mean that newcomers feel welcome and that various community groups thrive with ongoing engagement.

Key Stakeholders and Responsibilities

Participants used a matrix to identify and rank the people, groups, businesses, and organizations critical to realizing these events:

  • People: Individuals or groups like Rymans and Navy personnel were seen as potential participants or volunteers.

  • Local Groups: Existing social and activity groups (e.g., walking groups, singing groups, Kapa Haka, and schools) were identified as vital to promoting and attending events.

  • Businesses: Local businesses, including real estate agents and the Depot, were recognized for their potential to support events through sponsorship or services

  • Local Organizations: Core organizations such as the Local Board, community houses, library, sports clubs, and Rotary were seen as essential in providing resources, venues, and logistical support.

Summarising the discussion on goals and purpose of Community Events

This collaborative workshop with Devonport Peninsula Trust brought forward a shared vision for community events aimed at enhancing connection, belonging, and wellbeing on the Peninsula. By identifying event types, goals, and essential contributors, participants laid the groundwork for a cohesive and inclusive event calendar that reflects local culture and strengthens community ties. The next steps involve activating the network of identified stakeholders to support and execute these event ideas.
